Next Worldwide O.I.T.A.F. Congress for transporation

by rope 2011

Invitation of tenders for the place of venue of the next Worldwide O.I.T.A.F. International Conference 2011

There are 30 000 ropeway installations in the world, out of which approximately 18 000 in Europe. These figures suggest and are indicative of the economic importance of this, in its way unique, system of transport and its significance for tourism.  Yet it should be pointed out that in Asia and the Far East the booming economy of the countries has been and still is stimulating skiing tourism and is therefore a determinant factor which contributes to the growing importance of rope driven transport.

As early as 1959 it was felt that an international platform was needed to promote the ropeway industry and importance, the International Organisation for Transportation by Rope, O.I.T.A.F., which was to bring together the three most important directly interested categories, i.e.  the ropeway operators, the ropeway manufacturers and the ropeways supervisory authorities from all over the world, as well as other concerned organisations and persons, and offer them the possibility to discuss the problems of the their profession. There are 8 committees who hold several meetings in a year to discuss economic or technical subjects, draft recommendations for or papers on the studied subject which are published by O.I.T.A.F. as O.I.T.A.F. recommendations or study papers.  So far Interested categories of 31 countries from all over the world have applied for and been admitted as full members of O.I.T.A.F..

In order to highlight the economic and technical role and importance of ropeways and their significance for tourism O.I.T.A.F organizes each year a seminar and every sixth year the worldwide O.I.T.A.F. international conference on transportation by rope..

The first worldwide O.I.T.A.F. international conference on transportation by rope has been organized in Rome in 1957 and was followed by the conference organized in Paris in 1963, and thereafter by the conferences organized in 1969 in Lucerne, in 1973  in Vienna, in 1981 in Munich, in 1987 in Grenoble, in 1993  in Barcelona, in 1999 in San Francisco and last bust not least in 2005 in Innsbruck. The great interest shown by participants who attended the conferences  bears witness for the great attraction  held by these international events.

This is why O.I.T.A.F. has now decided to organize the next conference in 2011 and seen the worldwide importance of the event has also decided to invite tenders for the organization and the place of venue of the next conference.

The Management committee of O.I.T.A.F. has drawn up a list of requirements and criteria to be met by applicants so as to facilitate the final selection of the place of venue of the next conference.
